Grilled Cheese

Grilled Cheese

Grilled cheese is the ultimate comfort sandwich: golden, buttery toasted bread with a molten, gooey cheese center. Simple yet deeply satisfying, it is a nostalgic favorite for all ages. Pair it with tomato soup for the classic combination.

Ingredients

  • 4 slices bread
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese, sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter or mayonnaise

Instructions

  1. Butter one side of each slice of bread.
  2. Place two slices butter-side down in a cold pan.
  3. Layer the cheese on top and close with the remaining bread, butter-side up.
  4. Cook over medium-low heat until the bottom is golden, about 4 minutes.
  5. Flip and cook until the second side is golden and the cheese is fully melted.
  6. Slice in half and serve hot.

💡 Chef's tip

Spread mayonnaise instead of butter on the outside for an even, extra-crispy golden crust that does not burn as easily.

Cooking the sandwich low and slow is the secret, giving the cheese time to fully melt before the bread over-browns, so you get a crisp crust and a molten center.
