Sloppy Joes

Sloppy Joes

Sloppy joes are a quick, saucy ground beef sandwich that is a guaranteed family favorite. The sweet and tangy tomato sauce simmers with the beef in one pan in under 30 minutes. Pile it onto soft buns for an easy, kid-approved weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

  • 600 g ground beef
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1 bell pepper, diced
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 6 burger buns

Instructions

  1. Brown the ground beef in a skillet, breaking it up, then drain the fat.
  2. Add the onion and bell pepper and cook until softened.
  3. Stir in the ketchup, tomato paste, brown sugar, and Worcestershire.
  4. Add a splash of water and simmer for 10 minutes until thick and saucy.
  5. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
  6. Spoon the mixture onto toasted buns and serve.

💡 Chef's tip

Drain the rendered fat after browning the beef; it keeps the sloppy joe mixture rich but not greasy.

Cooking the sauce down with the beef rather than just stirring it in lets the meat absorb the sweet-tangy flavor and thickens it so it piles onto the bun instead of running off.
