Black Bean Veggie Burger

These hearty black bean burgers are savory, satisfying, and hold together beautifully, no crumbling. They are a budget-friendly, plant-based alternative that even meat-eaters enjoy. Pile one on a bun with your favorite toppings.

Ingredients

  • 2 cans black beans
  • 80 g breadcrumbs
  • to taste onion and garlic
  • 1 egg or flax egg
  • 1 tsp each cumin and paprika

Instructions

  1. Drain and rinse the beans, then spread on a tray and dry in a 180C (350F) oven for 10 minutes.
  2. Mash most of the beans, leaving some whole for texture.
  3. Mix with sauteed onion and garlic, breadcrumbs, egg, and spices.
  4. Form into patties and chill 20 minutes.
  5. Cook in a hot oiled pan for 4 minutes per side until crisp and heated through.
  6. Toast the buns.
  7. Serve with lettuce, tomato, and your favorite sauces.

💡 Chef's tip

Chill the formed patties for twenty minutes before cooking so they firm up and keep their shape.

Drying the mashed beans in the oven for a few minutes before mixing removes moisture that would otherwise make the patties fall apart on the grill or pan.
